Tomorrow is National Tell A Joke Day. It is observed every August 16th.

What’s better than a day filled with laughter?

A joke, quite simply, is something that is said with the purpose to cause amusement or laughter. The final sentence, known as a punchline, often provides a humorous twist or ending.

 

Jokes come in many different styles, including:

  • One-liners – As long as there are tests, there will be prayer in schools.
  • Puns – Have you ever tried to eat a clock? It’s very time consuming.
  • Stories or anecdotes – Remember when people had diaries and got mad when someone read them? Now they put everything online and get mad when people don’t.
  • Non Sequiturs (jokes that make no sense) – “Why is a raven like a writing desk?” from Alice in Wonderland.
  • Parodies – “Like a Surgeon” and pretty much everything else by Weird Al Yankovic.
  • Knock-Knock jokes  –“Knock, knock,” “Who’s There?” “Little old lady.” “Little old lady who?” “I didn’t know you could yodel.”

They can also be physical such as screwball, pranks, pratfalls, and slapstick. The Three Stooges (a personal favorite!) were the epitome of slapstick.

Regardless of the method of delivery, the main purpose of a joke is to entertain by providing humor, even though jokes can sometimes be used to make serious commentary like in the case of satire, (think “The New Yorker” or “Saturday Night Live”).

Jokes have been an integral part of human history for centuries, (it is thought that Palamedes, a Greek mythological figure, invented jokes as well as counting, currency, weights and measures, and several letters of the alphabet), and many great minds have spent time and energy in trying to understand what makes jokes funny.

How to Celebrate?

    • Tell a joke to every person you meet on that day.
    • Pick up a joke book and read it in your spare time.

  • Take a comedy/improv class, or sign up for open mic night at a local club.

. . . Laughing can make us healthier. It improves our immunity, helps regulate blood sugar levels, improves sleep, and releases endorphins (natural “feel good” chemicals) into the brain.

. . . Gelotology (from the Greek gelos “laughter”) is the study of laughter and humor, and their effect on the human body.

. . . Laughing for 10 to 15 minutes can burn up to 40 calories.

Planning a wedding?

Honor National Tell A Joke Day on your wedding day by:

  • Print a little humorous joke on your programs.
  • Have a comedian entertain your guests at your reception.
  • Incorporate jokes into speeches and toasts, . . .
  • . . . and the MC’s comments.
  • Jokes can be on little signs or table numbers, . . .
  • . . .in your ceremony readings,
  • . . . and in your ceremony vows.

Be sure to clear any jokes that are to be used during the ceremony with your officiant first, and make sure that all jokes (for ceremony and reception) are appropriate for all ages (remember you’ve got grandma and the ring bearer listening).

Here’s a few that you may want to try –

“They’ve been going together for so many years, instead of the Wedding March the organist should have played the Hallelujah Chorus.”

“The bride looks absolutely stunning, the groom looks absolutely stunned!”

“The groom was not a pretty baby – his mother got morning sickness after he was born.”

“The bride wept, the bridesmaids cried – and even the wedding cake was in tiers.”

International Beer Day, a global celebration of beer, is held on the First Friday in August. This year it’s tomorrow, August 4th.

Beer is an alcoholic drink made from yeast-fermented grains, such as wheat or barley.

Typically flavored with hops, herbs and fruits can be added for a different flavor. It is one of the world’s oldest beverages, thought to date back to the early Neolithic era (~9500 BC).

A popular beverage, beer is listed on many Top-5-Beverages-In-The-World lists, following water, soft drinks, and tea. (With coffee taking the #5 spot).

How to Celebrate?
• Try your hand at brewing your own beer. At-home beer making kits are readily available and cost less than you’d think (many start under $50).
• Spend your evening at a bar trying out new types of beer. Local craft beer bars and microbreweries are popular.
• Take a brewery tour and spend time learning the science behind beer making.
• Be adventurous. Sample beers varieties that you haven’t tried before.
• Enjoy beers from other cultures.

3 Money Saving Tips Without Sacrificing Style for Your Wedding

Looking for ways to save money without sacrificing the overall feel of your wedding? Check out these tips.

Greenery and candles are still one of the best ways to save money on centerpieces. It’s elegant and cost effective.

Want something with big impact, but not the big price tag? How about a graceful candelabra,

or a large, elegant vase or candle holder? Gorgeous, but costs a fraction of a large floral arrangement.

You can also add some pizzazz by easily dressing up plain glass candle holders with adhesive rhinestones, ribbon, lace, glitter or paint.

Word of caution: If you do use real candles, get the unscented kind. When you get a room full of candles, a scent will get overpowering, can aggravate someone’s allergies, and (believe it or not) will affect the taste of the food.

Not All Money Saving Ideas Are Good

Serve cupcakes or cake pops rather than a traditional tiered wedding cake.

You’ll save money per serving (cupcakes & cake pops are often .50 – $1 less per serving than cake). You won’t be paying a cake cutting fee (that most venues charge).

And you’ll be able to order just the amount you need.

For example, if you have 100 guests, you’ll want 100 servings. For a tiered cake, you’ll end up with at least 118 servings as an 8″ tier serves 24, a 10″ serves 38, and a 12″ serves 56. Not that there’s anything wrong with having extra leftover cake, some couples do so on purpose, but if you need to shave something off your budget, this is an easy way to do so.

Fun Stuff

Photo booths are still popular. And with good reason – they’re fun, a great activity for your guests, people can be silly or or serious . . .

However, many couples whose budget doesn’t allow for a traditional photo booth are changing it up.

Ok, DIY Photo Booths are a bit more effort on your part than having a professional photo booth, (not to mention that there won’t be the fun extras that the pros offer, such as a custom logo, booth attendant, professional equipment, and on-site prints). However the DIY route can be relatively easy. Get a digital camera on a tripod, and guests can snap away. You’ll have to wait until after the event to load up all the photos online for you and your guests to see.

A relatively new service is perfect for use with a DIY photo booth. Veri is a photo and video sharing product which was created specifically for weddings. Before your wedding day, your guests will get a link for the Veri app. Then any photos and videos they take at your wedding will be shared instantly. Unlike a hashtag where the photo has to be uploaded, with this app your guests won’t have to do anything other than snap the picture. Be sure to check out www.veri.com for more details.

Sunshine, Rain, and Your Wedding Day

Sitting here in my family room listening to the rain. Not a relaxing patter on the window. It is thundering and coming down hard.

I mean HARD!

So hard, that even with a rain coat and umbrella you’d get drenched.

The sun was shining not just 20 minutes ago! It was nice enough to do a little yard work, or sit outside and have lunch.

But now we’ve got a thunderstorm.

“Why in the world is she talking about the weather?” you’re probably thinking.

From weddings held at parks and shelter houses, to backyards, and venues with lovely outdoor settings – outdoor weddings are on the rise. And with outdoor weddings, you’ve got to contend with the weather.

In a perfect world, it would never rain (and the wind would only be a comfortable breeze) on your wedding day.

In the real world, Mother Nature may have other ideas. And it’s not just rain. There may be wind storms, an unusual cold front, or high humidity or a heat wave.

You can’t really combat this (the weather is going to be what it is), but you can plan ahead in case the weather isn’t cooperative. What if you have rain on your wedding day (or other inclement weather)?

Have a “Plan B” for your wedding with an alternate indoor (or appropriately sheltered/air conditioned/heated) site, and discuss this with your wedding coordinator, as other set-up logistics will be affected. Inform your venue manager and other vendors of your “Plan B,” and let them know who the person is who will designate if “Plan B” has to be put in place.

Some things to take into consideration:

1) Your other vendors needs
• How long does your florist need to set up? Is she decorating an arch and placing lots of flowers along the sides of the aisle, or does she just have to set down a couple floral arrangements?
• Your photographer, videographer, dj, musicians all have equipment that cannot get wet.

2) The comfort of your guests.
• Will there be high humidity, compounded by guests having to sit in the sun?
• Even if the rain has stopped, has the ground been left so slick and muddy that it is unsafe to walk on?

3) The proximity of the site for “Plan B” from your original site
• Is it close enough to be able to direct guests to the “building on the right” instead of the “clearing on the left?”
• Or will your guests have to drive to a second location?

Most of the time plans go as intended, and here’s hoping that you have beautiful weather on your wedding day. But, have a solid “Plan B” in place, and remember, you’re marrying the love of your life, and celebrating this with your closest friends and family!

11 Ways to Save Money on Your Wedding That Actually Work

It’s no secret that weddings cost a lot of money.

Here are 11 easy ways to save money without sacrificing your wedding style.

  1. Individual programs or menu cards look pretty, but you can save a bundle by providing this information on a pretty calligraphed sign.
  2. Serve only beer and wine instead of offering a full bar.
  3.  Skip the champagne toast (or just have it for the head table). Your guests will be fine drinking what they have.
  4.  Some vendors offer discounts for a wedding on a weekday or during a non-peak month such as January or March.
  5.  You can save on catering by having a morning or early afternoon ceremony/reception.
  6.  Trim your guest list. You’ll save on food and beverages. And less people means less seating, which = less tables/chairs, centerpieces, and linens.
  7. 10 Easy (and Invisible) Money Saving Ideas

  8. Offer a meatless entree. A veggie or pasta entree costs less than one with meat.
  9.  Have your ceremony and reception at the same venue. No need for a limo or party bus to transport the wedding party, and you’ll save on multiple site fees.
  10.  Omit favors, your guests won’t miss them.
  11.  Use more greenery and less flowers in your arrangements.
  12.  If your ceremony and reception are at the same location, have your DJ provide the music for both instead of hiring live musicians for the ceremony.

9 Things No One Tells You About Wedding Planning – Why Aren’t They?

wedding planningNot too long ago, I read an article titled “9 Things No One Tells You About Wedding Planning.”

It has lots of helpful information that will help ensure that the wedding day turns out they way the couple want it to be.

These tips, such as . . .

  • Don’t start planning the second you get engaged
  • Make a list of all the most important photos you want taken on your wedding day
  • It takes approximately 250 hours to plan a wedding
  • Allow time to call people on your invitation list who didn’t send back the rsvp
  • Plan a budget

. . . are spot on.

I’m just wondering why is no one sharing this info with their brides and grooms?

These tips are all things I regularly tell my couples. Ok, probably not exactly verbatim, but the info gets passed along.

How I Got Started as a Wedding Planner

I wholeheartedly agree with the first sentence of the article, “It’s an unfortunate, but often inevitable, part of planning a wedding that there are just some things you won’t know or realize until after the big day is over.” I mean, you don’t know what you don’t know. (And when you start planning your wedding it’s inevitable that you won’t know stuff, unless you’ve planned several weddings before).

But your vendor team should be keeping this “unknown information” to a minimum so your planning and wedding day will go as smoothly as possible.

The Top 6 Wedding Planning Mistakes Couples Make

To help make the planning (and pre-planning) stages of your wedding day go smoother and less stressful, keep these common 6 wedding planning mistakes in mind.

# 1: Making Plans Too Soon After the Engagement

Weddings are an exciting time, and I get that. When you become engaged you’re excited to get started with all of the fun of planning your big day.

But some couples jump in too soon. As soon as they get engaged, some couples start pouring through wedding magazines, surfing the internet for wedding planning websites, sifting through Pinterest and creating a “My Wedding Day” pin board . . .

Believe me, you will have plenty of time to do all that and more, but for right now . . .

Enjoy being engaged!

Show off your ring. Relish being a fiancee. There’s time for the planning.

When couples jump in and start planning too quickly, they often overlook things such as a budget, or even sitting down with each other to discuss how they both envision and what they want for their wedding day.

You want all of the components of your wedding day – your dress, your flowers, your venue, and everything else – to coordinate and work together. Diving in too soon and you may end up with a mish-mosh. Also, if you start with a budget in place, you’ll know what you can afford, and end up getting the things you really want.

Make a game plan first – then start planning.

# 2: Not Having a Rain Plan

If you are planning an outdoor ceremony or reception, it’s an absolute must to take into consideration the possibility that Mother Nature won’t be cooperative.

While it’s so easy to hope for sunny skies, or assume that it “just can’t possibly rain on my wedding day,” you have to be realistic.

Have a “Plan B” in place – rent a tent or a small indoor venue, have several umbrellas available (perfect for rain or too much sun).

# 3: Assuming That an Outdoor Tent Reception Will Be Cheaper and Easier

Too often I’ve heard people say “I’m going to have a tent in the backyard to save money.”

In reality, with a tent reception, there is usually more that needs to be taken care of. Think of it this way, you are literally “building” a reception venue where none existed before.

Most homes aren’t already equipped to handle 100+ people so you may need to rent such things as: generators, restrooms, lighting, fans or AC units, heaters, and trash cans.

# 4: Misjudging the Size (and Capacity) of the Venue

You’ll have to ask yourself, “Although the venue has a maximum capacity of 200, will all 200 of my guests really be comfortable?”

Will everyone be able to easily see the goings-on of the evening, or will some be stuck behind a pillar, or (worse yet!) in another room entirely?

Will there be enough space between tables for guests and wait staff to easily maneuver, or will things be tight? cozy is one thing. Feeling like you’re packed in a sardine can is another.

No one wants to feel like they can’t move about without knocking into something or someone. Plan accordingly so your guests enjoy a wedding that is fun and elegant, not crunched and unpleasant.

# 5: Misjudging the Timing for Your Outdoor Ceremony

Outdoor ceremonies are beautiful. There’s nothing like celebrating amid nature – the flowers, green grass, lovely ponds . . . The scenery and landscape of outdoor sites can’t be beat!

Unless the bright sun is shining directly into your guests eyes, or it’s gotten so dark that they can’t see beyond the row in front of them.

If possible, go to your ceremony venue at a similar time of day (and similar time of year) as your wedding day to see where the sun is located.

# 6: Forgetting Why You’re Having a Wedding

With all of the details involved in planning a wedding, it’s easy to get so wrapped up in the “wedding” that you forget about what’s really important.

Yes, you want all of your plans and hard work to go exactly they way you’ve envisioned it to be. But this is real life, and sometimes little hitches pop up – the flowers in your bouquet aren’t the right shade of pink, the dj plays the wrong song during intros, there are soggy patches under the tent from the rain storm the night before.

But . . . regardless of everything else, you are marrying the love of your life so keep your focus on celebrating the joy and love you have!

10 Easy Ways to Really Enjoy Your Wedding (From Planning to the Big Day Itself!)

1. Take Your Time
You’ve got a lot to do, so give yourself plenty of time for planning. 12 –18 months is ideal. Having extra time helps keep stress levels down AND give you more time to search for and save money for the things you really want.

2. Be Present In Each Moment
One of the biggest complaints couples have after their wedding day is that it went by so fast that it’s all just a big blur.

So, during the planning, especially the fun parts like food tastings and music selections, and absolutely on your wedding day – step back and just soak it all in. You’re making these wonderful memories, so be sure to take a moment to really experience it.

3. Do A First Look
Many couples look forward to the first moment when they first see each other. There’s nothing that compares to that emotional experience. But doing a “first look” instead of waiting to see each other during the ceremony processional does not diminish that flood of emotion. And it can be even more special since you have the opportunity to have a special moment – just the two of you – and really have the time to let the moment sink in.

4. Don’t Get Caught Up In “Perfection”
Real life isn’t perfect, and beware of anyone who promises that they can make everything perfect. Sorry to be blunt but they’re lying, or delusional. It just isn’t humanly possible.

5. Share Something Personal And Unique With Your Guests
There is no one right way to do a wedding. Which is wonderful, because it gives you so many options to create a wedding day that really represents the two of you. Special poetry for our ceremony readings. Including family customs. Playing Grandma’s favorite hymn. Having your caterer recreate a favorite family dish.

Sharing something personal and special adds to the emotional enjoyment for everyone in the room. Not to mention all those wonderful photos and video you’ll have that has captured this personal-ness.

6. Prioritize, Prioritize, Prioritize
There are just too many details that go into a wedding to be able to put the same level of importance on each one – you’ll just end up driving yourself (and everyone around you) crazy!

Make a list of all the things that you will have in your wedding – the music, the cake, the flowers, and rate them by order of importance. What’s more important to you, a delicious cake or awesome flowers? Fabulous food or a killer gown? Get your fiancé’s input as well. It’s his wedding too!

Ideally, you may “want it all” but unless you’ve got the pocketbook of a Rockefeller, you’ll need to make some compromises. Choose the top 3 or 4 things that are most important to you and your fiancé, and concentrate most on them.

7. Accept That You Can’t Please Everyone
At no other time in your life will so many people offer up their opinions, advice, and thoughts about what you “should” do for your wedding. Some may sound good, some will seem silly, and others will make absolutely no sense for you and your fiancé at all.

Avoid the head spin by understanding that you cannot please everyone! And guess what? It’s absolutely OK! This is the one day in your lives where the only people you have to please are you and your fiancé, and absolutely no one else.

8. Remember why you’re planning this wedding
It’s not just because of one day, but for all the following days that you will be blessed to spend with the love of your life. Remember to schedule some regular ‘non-wedding’ activities by yourself and with friends. Remember to pamper yourself – put on some relaxing music & soak in the tub. Schedule regular dates with your fiancé – but do not talk about the wedding. And most important, have fun!

9. Eat!
I know you’re going to be excited, and probably not have much of an appetite, but . . .

Take the time to eat on the day of your wedding. Have breakfast, a bagel and cream cheese, maybe some fruit. And if your ceremony start time is late enough, eat lunch.

You’ll be on your feet and on the go for several hours before dinner time. Make sure you keep your body properly fueled. You don’t want make yourself worn out and hungry – or worse yet, pass out from lack of food.

10. Hire A Day-Of Coordinator
You’ve put so much time and effort working on your wedding plans before the big day – You (as well as your wedding party and your mom) shouldn’t have to work ON the day itself. Having a day-of coordinator allows you to be able to actually be able to relax and enjoy your wedding day.

I tell my couples that their job is to look gorgeous and enjoy the day. My job is to make sure that everything goes smoothly and just they way they’ve planned it to be.
