A Real Wedding Story: When Things Go Wrong
File this under wedding planning services—and why they matter more than you think.
Several years ago, I received a letter from a groom. It was a few weeks after his wedding, and although we did not work together, he wanted to share his experience.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t a happy one.
On the day of their wedding, he and his new bride had a horrible experience with their venue and caterer.
There’s a lot of wedding planning nonsense floating around online.

According to his letter, the staff was rude, they ran out of food, and what food remained was cold. Not exactly the kind of memories any couple wants from their wedding day.
The purpose of his letter was to warn me about this venue/caterer.
And honestly? It broke my heart. No couple deserves to be treated that way. And for any company, wedding-related or not, to provide such poor service is simply unacceptable.
But what made it even harder was this:
I soon realized that I could have helped this couple avoid this issue altogether
The Wedding Planning Services They Turned Down
Let’s rewind several months to when they were just starting their wedding plans.
I received a call from this same groom. He was interested in meeting to discuss wedding planning services, so we scheduled an appointment.
A couple of days later, he called back to cancel.
He explained that his fiancée preferred to handle the planning herself and didn’t feel they needed a planner or coordinator. I reassured him that wedding planning services don’t take over your wedding—they support you, guide you, and help you make informed decisions. I also let him know I’d be happy to help if they changed their minds.
They didn’t reschedule.
And I didn’t hear from them again… until his letter arrived after the wedding.
How Wedding Planning Services Help You Avoid Vendor Disasters
This situation highlights something many couples don’t realize—wedding planning services aren’t just about timelines and décor. A big part of the job is helping you avoid problems before they happen.
Vendor Vetting and Industry Knowledge
One of the most valuable aspects of wedding planning services is knowing which vendors to trust—and which to avoid.
The venue this couple chose was, unfortunately, known in the industry for poor service and unreliable execution. Had they kept that initial appointment, I would have steered them away from it immediately.
Couples often don’t know what they don’t know. That’s where experience matters.
Wedding planning doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.

Contract Review and Red Flags
Wedding contracts can be full of fine print, vague language, or missing details.
Professional wedding planning services help you:
- Understand what’s actually being promised
- Identify potential red flags
- Ask the right questions before signing
That alone can prevent a lot of unpleasant surprises.
Backup Plans and Problem Solving
Even with the best vendors, things can go wrong. The difference is having someone in your corner who knows how to handle it.
Wedding planning services include contingency planning and real-time problem solving—so issues are addressed quickly, often before you even know they exist.
You Don’t Have to Hand Over Control
One of the biggest misconceptions about wedding planning services is that hiring a planner means giving up control.
It doesn’t.
You can still plan your own wedding, make your own decisions, and bring your vision to life. A planner simply helps you do it more efficiently—and with fewer costly mistakes. Think of it as having an experienced guide, not a replacement.
Wedding Planning Services Can Be Flexible
Another common misconception is that you either hire a full-service planner—or nothing at all.
In reality, wedding planning services can be tailored to your needs. For example:
• Full-service planning
• Partial planning
• Day-of (or month-of) coordination
• Consultation-only services
Some couples just need help reviewing contracts or selecting vendors. Others want more hands-on support. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach.
A Simple Reminder for Engaged Couples
I’m not sharing this story to pat myself on the back or claim to know everything about weddings.
I’m sharing it because this couple didn’t know what they didn’t know—and it cost them.
Wedding planning services aren’t a luxury. They’re a resource.
They exist to help you make informed decisions, avoid preventable problems, and actually enjoy your wedding day.
And whether you need a little guidance or a lot, having the right support can make all the difference.
Before you book your venue or sign any vendor contracts, make sure you have the right information.
While I no longer provide full wedding planning services, I do offer online consultations to help you review vendors, spot potential red flags, and make confident decisions—before issues arise.
Planning a wedding is a lot easier when you have reliable advice.
