(I wrote this article in 2011, soon after the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. The sentiment reflected in this article is still relevant today, particularly with the upcoming wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle).

It seems that everyone loves a wedding. It is estimated that over 2 billion people across the globe – via television and internet video steaming – tuned in to watch the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. People woke up in the wee hours of the morning to tune in. Others got together for a “Royal Wedding Party.”
Why would so many people want to be witness to the nuptials of two people they don’t even know?
The world needed this wedding.
Prince Harry and Megan Markle: What Will We See At Their Wedding?
We’ve been bombarded by a global darkness. Economic woes, extreme weather devastation, wars. The joy and hope for the everyday person offered by this wedding was desperately needed.
We are the “everyday person.” And Kate is one of us. As a commoner, her family roots aren’t from royalty. Her childhood home had 4 bedrooms. She most recently lived with her parents in the village of Bucklebury, population 2066. Kate is living the dream so many little girls have – to be a princess. This fairytale is coming true.
On her wedding day, Kate Middleton was the embodiment of what we all strive for – dignity, serenity, beauty.
The big question on everyone’s mind leading up to the big day was “what will her wedding gown look like?” And she didn’t disappoint.
Her satin gown with long sleeves and bodice of ivory lace, by Sarah Burton, creative director for Alexander McQueen, was a perfect blend of traditional, romantic, and simple (but not boring!). There were modern touches, a “plunging” lace neckline over a sweetheart neckline, done tastefully and modestly — appropriate for a future queen. It is sure to be influential in upcoming gown designs.
[ctt template=”1″ link=”W3d7l” via=”yes” nofollow=”yes”]”In the busyness of each day, keep our eyes fixed on what is real and important in life.”[/ctt]Her make-up was polished, yet very natural, as was her half up/half down hairstyle. She carried a diminutive bouquet – Myrtle, Lily of the Valley, Hyacinth, and a few Sweet William blooms.
Weddings are naturally joyful events, bringing together friends and family in ceremony and celebration. Will and Kate’s wedding was attended by the friends and family of the world.
This wedding gives us hope of a brighter future, the promise of something better, a belief that magic is possible as it pulls us out of the global darkness. Perhaps not completely to a place where everything is perfect and wonderful and rosy, but to a place where we can be confident that something better is possible, even for a moment.
In the words of the prayer that William and Kate composed for their ceremony: “in the busyness of each day, keep our eyes fixed on what is real and important in life.”
Hearts, Joy, Love!
