The Shoe Game – a Fun Wedding Reception Activity

Looking for a fun activity for your wedding reception? Something that won’t take too long, and will capture your guests attention? Then you’ve got to do the Shoe Game!

The Shoe Game - a Fun Wedding Reception Activity - bride and groom's shoes on the ground with the bride's bouquet

If you’ve attended any weddings in recent years, you’ve probably seen the Shoe Game (sometimes called the Newlywed Game). If not, here’s how it goes. It’s really quite simple.

How to Play the Shoe Game

1. The happy couple sit back-to-back (usually right in front of the head table/sweetheart table, so all guests can easily see them).

2. They then take off their shoes, and hand one of them to their partner. (Both will now be holding one of their own shoes, and one of their partner’s shoes).

3. A person is designated to ask questions (often the DJ, as he/she knows how to keep things flowing).

4. The bride and groom then answer each question by holding up the appropriate shoe.

For example, the question may be “Who is the better cook?” If you think you are, you hold up your shoe. If you think your partner is, then you hold up his/her shoe.

Your guests will get a kick out of your responses, and there will be a lot of laughter.

Ask a variety of questions. Pick some that will allow your guests to get to know you and your partner better (“Who is older?” “Who has the most siblings?”) And ask some funny questions (“Who will replace the toilet paper roll?” “Who is the loudest?”)

If you’ve never seen the Shoe Game, you may be thinking “What’s so funny about asking who is the loudest, or the better cook, or . . .?” OK, in everyday conversation, these questions aren’t the laugh-riot, but when asked during the Shoe Game, part of the fun is seeing the couple answer. What was their answer? Were their answers the same? Different? How fast did they answer? (Was it immediate, or did one have to think about it a bit?)

Keep in mind that while these questions are meant to be asked in fun, be aware of any that might end up causing tension, to either of you or to any of your friends/family members attending. If there are any family tensions, then skip the question that asks “Who has the craziest family?” “If you and your partner have decided not to have children, or are unable to have children, skip “Who wants a baby first?”
