5 Clever Fall Wedding Ideas and Inspiration

What comes to mind when you hear the words “Fall” or “Autumn”? Is it jack-o’lanterns and a color scheme of orange and brown? Could be, but like many engaged couples, you are probably wanting some different fall wedding ideas. For your fall wedding, there really are many more options. But how do you decide on what decorative elements to use? Not sure what flowers to use in your bouquets and centerpieces? And don’t forget about the food and beverages you will be offering your guests.

Where to start? Well, why not let the season guide you? Here are some suggestions for a Fall wedding:

1) Fall Wedding Colors

In the Fall, Mother Nature naturally gives us a rich, warm, saturated palette of colors – not just browns and oranges, but gorgeous reds, golds, deep greens and purples too. Some beautiful fall color palettes are: red and purple, orange and black, crimson and gold. Gold, bronze, and copper make for lovely accent colors.

2) Fall Wedding Centerpieces & Other Decor

Add richness and dimension to your floral arrangements by incorporating seasonal elements such as fruits/vegetables (e.g. pomegranates, pears, apples, artichokes, purple grapes, gourds, cranberries), leaves, and branches. You can also use leaves instead of rose petals to scatter on tables.

For the little ones in your wedding party, you can also use leaves in the flower girl’s basket, or have your ring bearer carry a little birds nest instead of the traditional pillow.

Instead of glass vases use baskets, copper tins, hollowed out pumpkins or butternut squash. Or, if you are using glass vases, add the unexpected, such as acorns or sheaves of wheat.

Many flowers are in-season in Fall, including: dahlias, hellebores, orchids, and sunflowers. And don’t forget about these great year-round options: baby’s breath, carnations, orchids, roses, stephanotis, and gardenias.

3) Food

Fall foods are typically heartier than summer fare, such as Roast pork loin with roast potatoes, Cornish hen and wild rice, or a yummy Shepherd’s pie.

Vegetarian options like wild mushroom risotto or pumpkin or butternut squash ravioli.

You don’t have to get fancy. Comfort foods like tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches, or pork sliders are perfect.

4) Beverages

“… with the possibility of cooler temperatures at your fall wedding, your guests will really appreciate a hot cocktail!” says Matt Feltner of Drinks by Matt a private event bartending service here in Dayton.

Fall cocktails he suggests are:

Mulled Apple Cider
Cinnamon Spiked Cider
Apple Brandy Old Fashioned
Cranberry Gin and Tonic

(I’ll be sharing Matt’s recipes for these cocktails in tomorrow’s post).

5) Favors

A little bag of candy is a common favor idea. Say “Fall” with your favors by having seasonal shaped chocolates (leaves, acorns, pumpkins), gourmet caramel apples, bottles of maple syrup, mini s’mores kits, or bags of kettle corn.

6) Other Fall Details

Fall evenings can be chilly so you may want to provide wraps or blankets for your guests if your event will be out-of-doors. Add some plaid touches in your invitation suite, table linens/napkins, or your shoes.
