Biggest, Heaviest, Most Expensive – 12 Record Breaking Wedding Statistics

Close Up of Brides Wedding Bouquet - iggest, Heaviest, Most Expensive - 12 Record Breaking Wedding Statistics

A wedding cake weighing over 15,000 pounds. A bridal veil over 4 miles long. Having 126 bridesmaids. Sounds made up, but all quite true, and record breaking. From the biggest to the heaviest, and most expensive, let’s take a look at 12 instances of wedding world records:

1) Biggest Wedding Cake

Queen Victoria’s wedding cake was huge. It weighed 300 pounds. But it’s not the heaviest wedding cake. The world’s heaviest wedding cake weighed 15,032 pounds. But it wasn’t for a wedding, but for the 2004 New England Bridal Showcase held at the Mohegan Sun Hotel and Casino in Connecticut.

(Maybe it’s my sweet tooth, but this is my favorite of the wedding world records).

2) Most Expensive Wedding Cake

The biggest wedding cake wasn’t the most expensive one, though. That ‘honor’ goes to a bakery in England for a cake they created for the National Gay Wedding Show in 2013. Valued at $52.7 million, it is covered with over 4000 diamonds. Talk about bling!

3) Smallest Wedding Cake

Now try to imagine what the smallest cake would look like. One tier? One layer? How about only 1.1 cm tall? That’s less than half an inch tall! And, believe it or not, it had three tiers, was decorated with 25 flowers and 40 pearls (all made of icing), . . .

. . . and all 300 guests got a taste.

4) Most Expensive Slice of Wedding Cake

Not for the wedding day, but well after the fact. At the February 27, 1998 auction by Sotheby’s in New York, a boxed slice of cake from the 1937 wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor (the former King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson) sold for $29,900. Who knows why someone would want a 61 year old piece of cake, but the purchasers did say that they did not intend to eat it.

5) Heaviest Wedding Dress

It’s no secret that wedding dresses can be heavy, on the average they weigh 10 – 15 pounds, but can weigh up to 40 pounds or so. But the heaviest wedding dress weighs a whopping 400 pounds, and is covered with 500,000 glass pearls and over 400,000 crystals, with a 20 foot long train. Not surprising, that the bride couldn’t move while wearing her wedding gown, but was happy with her attire choice, telling the Minnesota’s Star Tribune, “It hurt, and I couldn’t move, but I felt like a fairy-tale princess.”

6) Longest Train

While 20 feet is awfully long for a train, it’s not the longest by far. Princess Diana’s train was 25 feet long, but still not the longest. That distinction goes to the train of a wedding dress designed in 2009 by Lichel van den Ende. It measured 2,488.65 meters (8,164 feet 10 inches). Think of it, that train is over 1.5 miles long!

7) Longest Wedding Veil

Since she was a little girl, the bride, Maria Paraskeva of Larnaca, Cyprus, wanted to break the record for worlds longest veil. She got her wish on her August 18, 2018 wedding by wearing a veil measuring 6,962.6 meters (22,843 feet 2.11 inches). That’s a little over 4.32 miles long! (And we thought the longest train was long. Phew!)

8) Largest Guest List

Jayalalitha Jayaram (Indian politician and actress) hosted her son’s 1995 wedding reception for over 150,000 guests. That’s nearly nine hundred times larger than the average wedding in the U.S., which is 167 guests, according to the Brides American Wedding Study.

9) Most Flower Girls

If you think that 167 guests is a lot of people, then what do you think of having 253 flower girls? That’s how many Charlene Pearson and her fiancé Leon Watts had for their April 2, 2017 wedding.

10) Most Bridesmaids

Keep watch on this one, as the number of most bridesmaids goes up every few years. In 2010, an Ohio couple has over 110 bridesmaids. The bride invited her gymnastics students to be her bridesmaids. Three years later, a Sri Lankan bride surpassed the Ohio bride with 126 bridesmaids. Most recently, a Florida bride had 168 bridesmaids.

11) Most Comic Book Characters On A Single Cover

How does a comic book rate being on a list of wedding world records? When it features the super heroes’ wedding! Marvel’s Deadpool Issue #27 featured the wedding of alter-ego Wade Wilson and his bride Shiklah. The cover featured 232 total characters, including the Incredible Hulk, Captain America, and Rocket Racoon, with Nightcrawler officiating the ceremony.

12) Most Bridal Bouquets Caught

Jamie Jackson of Draper, Utah has attended over 100 weddings since 1996. Her nickname “The Bouquet Slayer” is apt, as she has caught 50 bouquets. I wonder if she puts “Master Bouquet Catcher” on her resume?

What do you think of these wedding world records? How far would you consider “bending” the rules of tradition? Would you ever consider something extreme for your wedding? Let me know in the comments below.
