6 Tips For Choosing the Right Photographer For Your Wedding

You’re planning your wedding! One of the things you’re sure to be doing is choosing a wedding photographer. You’ll want wonderful photos to document and remember the day after all.

But choosing a photographer is more than just finding a “good” photographer. Finding the “right” photographer takes time, research, and consideration so you have beautiful photos that you will be proud of.

Here are five tips to help you pick the perfect photographer for your big day.

1. Do You Love Their Portfolio?

Every photographer has a slightly different style, and each style is not going to be to everyone’s taste. Some may love the photos; others may hate them. Disregard others’ opinions. The only opinions that count are yours and your significant other’s. What’s important is that the two of you adore them.

The photographer’s portfolio should stand out to you due to your personal preferences, and fit in with the image you have of your special day and how you’d like it to be remembered.

2. Check Their Reviews!

Despite ignoring remarks made from your mom expressing her dislike of your chosen photographer’s style, what you definitely should not overlook are the reviews and recommendations from previous clients.

While style is subjective, poor business management is sloppy. Avoid photographers who are known for being disorganized, unprofessional, or unfriendly and instead gravitate towards wedding photographers with glowing, lovely reviews. You need an approachable, attentive and well-organized individual who will be an asset, rather than a hindrance, to your wedding day.

3. The Right Lighting.

The right lighting is imperative for a photographer to capture your day effectively. Ensure that the photographer is comfortable with the light at your chosen venue, as some will favor the sunny outdoors over a dark historical building.

Again, their portfolios are beneficial here. Check to see what the photographer has done before, and be aware that excessive black and white images when evening comes around may be an indicator that they are not confident in the color quality of their evening photographs.

Also, look at the lighting used in their daytime photographs. The lighting helps to give us a ‘feel’ of the moment, and it’s a great way to highlight depth and expression into a photo. Does the lighting in the photographer’s photos give you the same feeling you’d like from your own wedding album?

4. Get To Know Your Photographer.

This is a significant bit! It may not be obvious, but building a good relationship with your photographer before your wedding is essential. Initially, after collecting a list of photographers whose portfolio stood out to you, you should meet with each one individually. If there is one who stands out as someone you like and could be around more, they are the one.

You need to have a rapport with your photographer, as they will be with you for the majority of your big day. Make sure you discuss your desires and expectations for the day. You want to be comfortable around them. If you aren’t, it will show in your photographs.

5. Prices and Packages.

Each photographer will offer different prices for different packages; it’s up to you to decide how much you will pay and for what. It is wise not to try to scrimp on money here, as your photos will be a lasting memory and keepsake of one of the most beautiful days of your life, and will adorn the walls of your home, (and become a family heirloom).

Many photographers include added hours, a certain amount of hi-resolution prints or JPGs (yes please!), albums, and second shooters. Others offer these for an additional cost. Make sure you know what your desired package includes and what will cost extra so you don’t end up with a hefty bill when you receive your photos!

6. Receiving Your Photos!

Keep in mind that your photographer’s job is not done at the conclusion of your wedding reception. Editing and ensuring that your wedding photographs are perfect is no walk in the park, it takes time, skill, and effort. This is why you can expect a bit of a wait to receive your photographs.

Discuss with your photographer what their expected time frames are, as these will differ with each. Will your wedding take place during a popular wedding month? If so, you’ll likely have to wait a bit longer for your photographer to complete your photos, (with more weddings taking place, they’re going to have more work to complete, after all).

But remember that faster doesn’t necessarily mean better and that rushing your photographer to complete your photos quicker may result in loss of quality. Be patient, it will be worth the wait.
