Dressing for your wedding is a very important part for both the bride and the groom. Although the spotlight is usually on the bride, the groom will also be ‘inspected’ by the guests for his dress sense. But more importantly than dressing to fit what others may feel important, the groom should dress to please himself, and fit the occasion. And, for such an occasion, you cannot dress like you would for work. Office attire is not wedding attire, and business suits and a groom’s suit simply aren’t the same.
Sure, there are many similarities, but suits, and their accessories, that are designed for special occasions have a more distinguished feel, often in fit as well as appearance. Don’t worry, the suit you’ll be wearing for your wedding won’t feel different but it will fit differently, with a more elegant look.
Groom’s Suit – 3 Layers Strong
For a wedding suit, you need 3 layers. The trousers of course, the jacket, and finally the waistcoat or vest. If you’re like many men, you may never have worn waistcoat/vest before. But in keeping with tradition, and the formality of your wedding, wearing a vest will compliment your suit and shirt.
If you don’t know where to begin, look for custom high end suits, tailors, and formalwear shops that can fit you specifically. You’ll see various styles of waistcoats/vests so you can make the proper decision for the rest of the suit. For example a double-breasted vest doesn’t go so well with a double-breasted suit.
If you want a dark toned suit, then perhaps getting a lighter tone vest is better. Suit lapels should not be in total match with the button height of your vest to create a little separation for your shirt to be seen properly.
Accessories – A Complicated Duo
Wedding suits will also have that you won’t find worn with office attire. A flower called a boutonniere is worn for special occasions and is attached just over the pocket square on the lapel.
But the question is, what kind of flower should you have? The flower the groom wears should coordinate with the rest of the flowers used on the wedding day, especially with the bride’s bouquet. However, it is often different than the boutonnieres worn by the rest of the men in the wedding party, whether in size or type of flowers used. Some people choose a dark tone flower with a dark tone suit. Navy blue suits look great with a deep red rose. For a lighter suit such as a grey, go with a warmer toned flowers such as orange, white or even purple.

A peak top fold (with one tip up) is also a nice style because it doesn’t take away from the flower above it. So, if you are a modern groom and want to stand true to tradition, you should wear a waistcoat/vest. Also make sure you have a pocket square that offsets your suit, and coordinates with your boutonniere without overshadowing or overpowering it. Express your personality in your attire, and be adventurous with the style you choose.
