4 Tips To Help You Choose The Perfect Engagement Ring

An engagement ring is perhaps the most important thing you’ll ever buy. There’s a lot of pressure to get it right, and making that choice can be overwhelming. There’s a lot of choices to make, from the stone to the size, so knowing what to pick can be hard. With these tips, you’ll see not just how to choose an engagement ring, but how you can choose the perfect ring, ready for that perfect proposal. So when you get ready to go shopping you can look where to buy moissanite engagement rings so you can really wow your other half. The ring is one of the most important parts of a proposal.

how to choose an engagement ring

1. The Style

There are many different styles of engagement ring. They can be vintage, traditional, modern, or anything in between. How do you choose the right style?

Take a look at the jewelry your girlfriend currently wears, and pay close attention to her favorite pieces that she wears the most often. Does she favor delicate or chunky pieces? Is her jewelry modern or classic? Is it subtle or more in-your-face? Match the engagement ring to the style she already wears so you know you’re picking something she’ll like. Look at sites like The Diamond Art where you can look at lots of different styles.

2. The Metal

Engagement rings are made in gold, silver, white gold, rose gold, platinum, and other metals. Choosing the right one can be overwhelming. As you did with the style, pay attention to the metals she already wears, and match the engagement ring to that. If, like a lot of women, she wears a mix of metals, ask a jeweler for advice and choose a metal that will flatter her skin tone. Golds flatter warm skin tones, whereas silvers can be better on cool skin tones.

3. The Stone

The classic engagement ring has a diamond, but more and more engagement rings are being made now using alternative stones, such as gemstones like amethysts and rubies. This can be a little cheaper, and many women actually prefer a colored stone. Think hard about whether your partner is the sort of woman who would prefer the traditional diamond or if she’s more of a risk-taker who would appreciate a different stone.

You should consider the cut of the stone too. Engagement ring stones come in a huge range of different cuts that change the look of the ring. The different cuts can make a ring feel modern or vintage and can make the stone look more or less sparkly. Take some time to look at different cuts so you can get an idea for what your girlfriend might like. Choose a cut that matches the style you have chosen.

4. The Size

This is the part that worries people the most. We’re not talking about the size of the stone, but of the ring size itself. You want to make sure the engagement ring fits properly. But how you can get her ring size without her knowing what you’re buying?

Without her noticing, borrow a ring from her jewelry box. Even if it’s for the wrong finger, a good jeweler can make an educated guess for what her ring size will be. It will be close enough for the proposal, and then you can have the ring resized afterwards if needs be. The other option is to buy a ring and have it sized afterwards.

  1. I’m glad that you mentioned how there are alternative stones being used for engagement rings, although diamonds are still considered classic. One of my closest friends asked me if I could help him pick a diamond ring for his girlfriend but he’s not even sure yet about what she likes. I’d rather have him ask for her preferences and ring size first before purchasing a costly jewelry piece for a special event.

    1. With diamonds and the option of other gemstones, as well as colored diamonds, there’s something to suit everyone. I agree with your suggestion that he ask for her preferences, unless he’s trying to make it a surprise. Tip #1 is key – he needs to know what her style is. What’s the style of her “go to” pieces of jewelry?
