Something Old – 10+ Fun Ideas For An Old Tradition

“Something Old Something New Something Borrowed Something Blue, and a Lucky Sixpence In Your Shoe.” It’s a timeless wedding saying and tradition, as many brides still incorporate these into their own weddings.

Something Old Something New

We’ve all heard the oft quoted this wedding rhyme. A few weeks ago we talked about ideas for your Something Blue. So, in continuation of the “Something Old Something New . . .” today we’re thinking about your “Something Old.”

Something Old Something New Something Borrowed Something Blue – What Will Be Your “Something Old”?

“Something Old” refers to establishing or maintaining continuity with the past, not just for the couple who are getting married but also for their future children. Once upon a time, according to English folklore, “Something Old” was used to ward off the Evil Eye, since “the usual effect on the bride of the Evil Eye is to render her barren.”

But this part of the rhyme isn’t just about any future children. It also symbolizes the couples’ individual lives before marriage, as well as their respective family heritages. It represents a link between their past and their present.

The bride may:

• wear her mother’s gown or veil
• carry a handkerchief passed down through the generations
• carry a family bible or prayer book

But your “Something Old” doesn’t have to be clothing, or quite so traditional.

Other options are:

• a classic getaway car
• a vintage cake topper
• a piece of fabric from your mother’s or grandmother’s wedding dress
• a ticket stub from your first date tucked into your bouquet or in a pocket
• jewelry such as an antique locket with family photos, a vintage ring or brooch
• a bottle of wine from a special year (perhaps your first date, parents’ or grandparents’ anniversary, a pet’s birthday)
• a classic perfume such as Chanel No. 5 (my mom’s favorite!) or Chantilly

Another important thing to remember. “Something Old” isn’t just a girl thing.

Non-girl (as opposed to “Not a girl” for all you The Good Place fans) “Something Old” ideas are:

• your (or your partner’s) father’s tie, handkerchief, or pocket square
• dad’s cologne (anyone remember English Leather or Stetson?)
• vintage cuff links or tie tack
