Cake Cutting 101

cake cutting
Choosing the wedding cake is most couples’ favorite part of wedding planning. But they often have questions about the cake cutting.

Many couples prefer a traditional tiered cake, but even those who choose a non-traditional dessert alternative will often have a small display cake for the cake cutting ceremony.

If you are choosing to include a wedding cake in your reception, keep these tips in mind.

When to cut the cake
Do you want to cut the cake at the beginning of the reception just before dinner or just after dinner before the dancing starts? Make sure you communicate that decision to your wedding coordinator, the catering staff, your DJ and your photographer.

If (and how) to announce the cake cutting
You may wish to do it quietly and include just close family and the photographer, but most couples have the DJ make an announcement so all of your can watch. Many couples choose a special song to be played during the cake cutting ceremony.

Be prepared
Your caterer or wedding coordinator will make sure that a cake knife and server, a dessert plate and napkins are at the ready.

Cutting the cake is very easy. You’ll both hold the cake knife (hand over hand), cut a small piece (cutting a thin triangular piece is easiest), and feed each other a bit of cake. Most couples will feed each other at the same time, others prefer to take turns.

If you have questions about cake cutting or cake/dessert options, I’d love to chat with you.
