Living Together or Getting Married? – 3 Reasons Why Marriage Is Still Worth It

People have many reasons for getting married. However, many there are couples who choose to live together, sticking with their “boyfriend-girlfriend” status indefinitely, without any intention of actually “tying the knot.”

These couples are often just as committed to each other as married couples are, they just decide not to formally get married.

A couple reasons couples choose not to get married include not wanting to feel old-fashioned, and not feeling the need to “prove” their love to anyone else.

There are, however, a range of compelling reasons why it’s still worthwhile to get married, even though many societies no longer view marriage as an essential stage in any committed, long-term relationship.

Here are 3 reasons why getting married is still worth it.

1) It’s A Great Excuse To Throw An Amazing Party

This point may seem a bit petty and self-indulgent at first. But keep in mind that people have been celebrating and commemorating the big and wondrous events in their lives with “amazing parties” for all of recorded history.

As we get older, the occasions for throwing huge parties and getting together with all of our friends and family diminish quite dramatically. People move away to different corners of the world; our careers take more and more time out of our schedules, and so on.

A wedding is one of those rare occasions in adult life for throwing the kinds of dramatic and awesome party that you’ll remember for years to come, according to your specific tastes.

2) It Helps To Formalize Your Relationship

It’s perfectly reasonable for a committed couple to not feel the need to prove their feelings to outsiders. Nonetheless, a wedding is a useful and effective way of “formalizing” your relationship, which can have all sorts of benefits down the line, including financial and legal, depending on the particular laws in your country.

Of course, getting married is also generally a good way to ensure that other people — older relatives included — take your relationship “seriously”. It is, of course, up to you whether this seems like a good and compelling reason for getting married, but it is something to consider.

Formalizing your relationship through marriage can also have a big impact on your relationship with your partner, by explicitly signalling a deep commitment which may have been only implied before.

3) It Can Be A Deeply Romantic Experience That You Remember For Years To Come

There’s a decent argument to be made that we are living in pretty cynical times. A lot of people are pretty skeptical of ideas like true love and romance.

A wedding can be a great occasion for sweeping this cynicism aside and experiencing a deeply romantic and uplifting event, which will stay with you for the rest of your life. These moments are especially precious – so you’re sure to want them captured by an expert wedding photographer such as Brightmoon Photography.
