12 Things That Can Go Wrong On The Wedding Day

We all want our wedding day to be perfect, but sometimes things don’t always go according to plan. No matter how much time and effort you put into planning your wedding, something may go wrong on the wedding day at the last minute.

While most of these things will just come out of the blue without you expecting them, many can be preventable, or at least have a viable Plan B in place, just in case. For the perfect wedding day, (or at least as close to perfect as you can get in real life), you need to be prepared for potential disasters.

Here are 12 things that can potentially go wrong on the wedding day, and what you can do about it.

1. Weather

No matter how much we want to, nobody can control the weather. You might be eagerly watching the forecast and hope for the best, but the increasingly unpredictable climate might have some surprises in store.

Make sure that you have a Plan B and access to an indoor venue, so you don’t have to ruin your hair and makeup, and your wedding won’t be a wash out due to high wind or rain storms on your wedding day.

2. Bridesmaids

Choosing your bridesmaids sounds like a simple task, and it usually is. But if you get it wrong, you will have to deal with the consequences. It is a good idea to vet your bridesmaids so you’ll know how reliable they are. The last thing you want them to do on your wedding day is get ridiculously drunk and flirt with everyone, or to be vocally unsupportive of your marriage.

You’ll be relying on your bridesmaids, from adjusting your makeup and dress, to mingling with guests and (appropriately) celebrating the day. If they ignore their responsibilities, you will get more stressed than blessed on the day.

3. Dress

You may find a last minute problem with your dress. Some problems can be remedied with a quick fix, like a small tear. Most won’t be noticed by anyone other than you. At the reception, you might have an accidental water spill, or red wine (the ultimate nightmare).

Having a spare dress is a costly option. Instead have an emergency kit available, including a sewing kit and some Wine Out.

4. Fire Alarms

No matter how good the venue is, you can’t prevent fire alarms. While it’s a rare occurrence, and it’s unlikely that someone would pull a fire alarm to play a prank (there would be serious legal repercussions), a fire alarm is possible.

Of course it’s no fun to have to stand outside in your wedding dress with your guests while the fire engines check the place. Unfortunately there wouldn’t be much else you could do. So, on the off chance that this happens, go with the flow, then get back to your party once the “all clear” has been given.

5. DIY Decorations

Remember – Do-It-Yourself decorations is not just the creation of the décor, but in setting it up too. You’ll need to be careful with who you trust with setting up your wedding decorations, or it could end badly.

Make sure that the person/people you have setting up your décor fully understands how you want it to look. Do a mock up and take photos. Write out thorough instructions. Do whatever it takes for them to know exactly what you are wanting to achieve.

6. Insects

If you are planning an outdoor summer wedding, you certainly need to ensure that you have insect repellent on hand. Nobody wants to share their food or cake with ants or flies. Not to mention that those little no-see-ums swarming about can ruin your best Luxury Wedding Photography pictures, too.

That said, having your wedding at a local farm is not a bad idea, you’ll just need to take some extra precautions..

7. Spelling Mistakes

The ultimate nightmare regarding wedding invitations, programs, or any other printed items, is finding out that there are spelling mistakes or omissions. It is crucial that you proofread (double check AND triple check) every document, slowly and carefully. Then have another person (or two) proofread them as well.

Check the signs and the inscription on the cake, so you don’t end up with an unpleasant surprise like somebody else’s names.

8. Band

Never let other people pick your wedding band, or DJ, or you will regret it. After all, you will have to dance to the tunes they are playing, and if you don’t like the music, you will not fully enjoy your party.

You may want to listen to some demos or see them perform in person before you book your band or DJ. And with everyone else you hire for your wedding, ask for a written confirmation.

9. Car Breaks Down

If you decide to hire special transportation for your wedding, it is important to use a reliable and reputable company. Just imagine getting in the car and being stuck on the side of the road, as the old Cadillac can’t cope with the heat. Always ask for the service history of the car you hire, or you might be late for your own wedding.

10. No Parking

So you picked a stunning wedding venue. Make sure that there is ample space for everyone to park. If your venue doesn’t have a dedicated parking lot, you will need to ask the venue manager about their typical practice before you officially book that location.

11. Power Outage

You can’t prevent power outages, but can have a backup generator on hand, particularly if there are be bad storms ahead in the weather forecast. You’ll want the party can go on, instead of being left in the dark.

Check with your venue, as they may already have a backup energy source. If you are holding the party in a private garden, you may already have a generator on hand if you will need an electrical source.

12. Illness

By all means, especially in weeks before your wedding, avoid anyone (babies and grown-ups alike) who has an illness, or you might end up with spots all over your face, or losing your voice, or worse.

It’s important to look after your health and immune system no matter what’s going on in your life, and even more so right before your wedding day.

Planning a wedding is stressful enough. And no one wants something to go wrong on the wedding day. To avoid having to deal with disasters on the day, make sure that you have prepared for everything.
