A live band vs dj – which should you have for your wedding reception? Which is better?
We recently published 3 Reasons For A Live Band For Your Wedding Reception, and have received a lot of feedback (mostly from DJs) reminding us what a fabulous choice DJs are for a wedding reception.
“3 Reasons For A Live Band . . .” was not meant to say that a live band is “better” than having a DJ. In reality, neither is inherently better or worse than the other – only different. So, based on these differences, and your particular wedding needs and requirements, only you can determine which is the best choice for your wedding.
Trying to determine the “live band vs dj” question for your wedding? Here are some Pros and Cons for each:
Live Band
Pros:
• Since a live band is live your guests will experience the pleasure of a performance.
• Live bands have a bigger opportunity for spontaneity, and can change up a song’s lyrics just for you.
• Non-dancers have something to watch and entertain them.
Cons:
• They have more people and more equipment, so yes, bands cost considerably more than DJs.
• Since they have more people and more equipment, they also take up more space. Depending on the size of your venue, a band just might not fit.
• A band’s “catalog” of music is smaller.
• Since they are not the original artist, if you really prefer hearing a song exactly the way it’s played on recordings, you may be unhappy with what is played.
• Bands don’t play continuously from the moment your reception starts until the last song. They typically play 45 minute sets with a 15 minute break in between.

Pros:
• They can play a large range of music styles, genres, and artists. Want an unusual song request or the latest dance music? It’s likely that your DJ should be able to get it.
• Many DJs have separate sound systems which gives you the option of having them provide music for your wedding ceremony as well.
• They can set up into a smaller space than a band.
• Since there are no breaks, the music can keep going until the last dance.
• And for the times you want the music to pause, such as your cake cutting or bouquet toss, most DJs are also great MCs so that’s covered too.
• DJs they are usually cost less than a live band.
Cons:
• DJs have a much different dynamic than a 5-7 piece band. It’s not the same “Wow” factor.
• Having a DJ with the wrong “personality.” Some will interact with your guests and be part of the entertainment, maybe even teaching a few dance moves to the latest line dance. Others stick to the sidelines, making announcements as needed. Many are in-between. Make sure you discuss this when interviewing your DJs so you don’t get an unpleasant surprise on your wedding day.
Hope these tips help with your “live band vs dj” dilemma. What type of entertainment will you choose for your wedding reception?

Thanks! It’s great to have options, and deciding between having a live band or a dj is definitely an important choice to make.
This is very helpful. At the end of the day, it still depends on your preferences. Also, you mentioned that wedding bands typically play 45 minute sets with breaks. How many songs does this usually include?
Exactly. With weddings, for the most part there is no real “right” or “wrong,” just what the couple prefer. Bands can usually play 10-15 songs per set, depending on the length of the songs, of course.
This is such a helpful breakdown! It’s great to see both live bands and DJs given fair consideration. It really comes down to what vibe you want for your wedding and what best fits your venue and budget.
Thanks. I’ve always believed that with weddings, there’s no one right or wrong way to do something, and with the different options there’s no “better than” or “worse than.” It all boils down to each couples wants, budget, and wedding vision.
